LA #3: Creating a Cover Letter and Resume
Assigned: Mon, Sept 17 (for Sections 7 & 9);
Tues, Sept 18 (for Section 13)
Due: 15 minutes before class on Mon, Sept 24 (for Sections 7 & 9);
15 minutes before class on Tues, Sept 25 (for Section 13)
Purpose: To show expertise in creating a cover letter and resume using Word.
There are two possibilities for this assignment. You need only choose ONE of the following to submit via blackboard:
- Complete lab 1 and lab 2, on wd 209-211. (For lab 1, you will complete all steps except 4 and 5. For lab 2, you will complete all steps except 5. When you are finished with your work, I want you to submit your final copy via your handin directory in Blackboard.)
- Create a one page cover letter similar to the one created in class. Make sure you include a figure, different font sizes and colors, a table, bullets, italics, appropriate spacing and indentation. Also, create a one page resume similar to the one created in class. Make sure you include different font sizes and colors, appropriate headings, spacing and indentations.
LA #2: Creating a Research Paper
Assigned: Wed, Sept 12 (for Sections 7 & 9);
Thurs, Sept 13 (for Section 13)
Due: 15 minutes before class on Mon, Sept 17 (for Sections 7 & 9);
15 minutes before class on Tues, Sept 18 (for Section 13)
Purpose: To show expertise in creating research papers in MLA style using Word.
There are two possibilities for this assignment. You need only choose ONE of the following to submit via blackboard:
- Complete lab 2, on wd 140. (For this assignment, complete all the steps except step 6: printing the research paper. I do not want a printed copy of your work; instead I want you to submit your final copy via your handin directory in Blackboard.)
- Create a research paper with appropriate header, class information, title, text with at least 1 footer, two different source references, and a reference section with a title and at least three references at the end in MLA style.
Handin instructions:
Follow the handin instructions for LA#1 and put the document in the appropriate View/Complete folder.
LA #1: Introduction to Word
Assigned: Fri, Sept 7 (for Sections 7 & 9);
Thurs, Sept 6 (for Section 13)
Due: 15 minutes before class on Mon, Sept 10 (for Sections 7 & 9);
15 minutes before class on Tues, Sept 11 (for Section 13)
Purpose: To show expertise in creating flyers with Word.
There are two possibilities for this assignment. You need only choose ONE of the following to submit via blackboard:
- Complete lab 3, on wd 70-1. Save your file as "Cabin Rentals Flyer.doc" (Note that you downloaded "Padddle Boat on Lake.jpg" from the scsite.com in LP #2. A repeat of the information is also found under lecture in the left hand menu.)
- Create a one page flyer with a boarder, title, paragraph of description, photo, at least two bullets, signature line making use of colors, themes, multiple fonts and font sizes, italics, bold, underline and spacing options.
Handin instructions:
We will be using a different handin procedure than for LP #1, instructions are given in blackboard under assignments and bulleted instructions are listed here.
Steps to submit written assignments:
1. Complete your document using WORD software and save it to keep a record of your work.
2. Log onto Black Board, click on our course section, and click on the menu option named "Assignments".
3. Click on "Assignments" which will open your folder for all handin directories for your assignments.
4. Click on the folder "Word Lab Assignments."
4. Under the title "Lab Assignment #1" there will be instructions followed by the underlined statement,"View/Complete Assignment:" Click on that underlined statement.
5. Your screen will then display three steps entitled "Upload Assignment." The first step is named Assignment Information.
6. The second step is named "Assignment Materials". There is a box for comments, designed for the student to send a message to the teacher. Next, is the indication "File to attach" before a smaller box appears next to a button labeled "Browse." Type in the name of your file and select the Browse button.
7. When you have selected the correct file, you may choose to select the SAVE button in step 3 so that you may work on the file whether or not you have your disk with you.
8. The mandatory part of step 3 is to click on the SUBMIT button.
9. At this point, Black Board magic takes over, and the teacher gets your document.
10. SUCCESS HINT: Include your name in the file name so that I will be less likely to confuse students' work
Computer Purchase Plan
Assigned: Wednesday, August 22 (for Sections 7 & 9);
Thursday, August 23 (for Section 13)
Due: by the start of class on Wednesday, August 29 (for Sections 7 & 9);
by the end of class class on Thursday, August 30 (for Section 13)
Purpose: To apply knowledge gained about computer hardware and software to successfully choose a computer for a specific application
You have decided that you want to purchase a new computer. You know that there are many options available to you for purchase. To make your choice easier, you decide to make a list of the minimum requirements that you want for your new computer and peripherals.
Use what you have learned from the “Essential Introduction to Computer” chapter and specify what you want in your new computer.
Make sure you include details on the following information:
I will primarily be using my computer for ________________.
Information on input devices, output devices, ports needed, minimum memory requirements, minimum storage requirements, software, peripherials, etc.
Now go online to find a computer that will meet your needs. (You may need to adjust your specifications to reach a reasonable price for your computer.)
You will be submitting a
- 2-3 page paper describing the type of features that you want in your new computer and why you want them (The paper does not have to be typed.)
- printout of a computer you found online to meet your needs. Discuss any differences between the computer you found online and the one you specified.
